Planner calculations
In the PaySuiteCompensation Management module, Planner calculations link editable fields in the Planner via formulas, enabling the system to automatically recalculate dependent values in real time whenever a user edits a connected field. Unlike standard calculated fields, Planner calculation fields remain directly editable while following the configured recalculation rules. This gives administrators precise control over how fields interact during the compensation planning process.
Planner calculations are configured in the Team planner view step of the compensation round configuration wizard. To learn more about compensation rounds, see Creating a compensation round.
Configuring Planner calculations
Planner calculations work through rules that specify which fields update each other when changes are made in the Planner.
To configure Planner calculations as an administrator, proceed as follows:
In the Team planner view step of the compensation round configuration wizard, select the Planner calculations tab, as shown in the image below:

Click the Add rule button. The following Add rule drawer opens on the right side of the screen:

Enter a Name for the rule.
Under Target, select the field to be recalculated from the Recalculate this field drop-down list.
Under Trigger, select the editable Planner field whose edit will initiate the recalculation from the When this field changes drop-down list.
-
In the Formula section, select Non-conditional or Conditional as the formula type.
For a non-conditional formula, enter your expression directly in the Formula field.
For a conditional formula, use one or more numbered condition blocks, each consisting of an If field for the condition and a Then field for the outcome. Click + Add condition to add more blocks, and fill in the Else field to define the fallback outcome. Copy or delete your conditions by clicking the and icons. With both formula types, you can press Control + Space to trigger autocomplete suggestions for properties and functions. You can also click Learn more to access the contextual menu with properties, keyboard shortcuts, or the formula builder help displayed in a drawer on the right of the screen. To switch to the full-width editing environment, click Open calculation workspace. For full details on formulas and the calculation workspace in our platform, see the Advanced calculations article.
7. Click Apply to save the rule.
Saved rules appear in the Planner calculations tab, grouped into cycles based on their target field. Each cycle lists all the rules that affect a given target, which allows you to review the complete recalculation logic at a glance.
In this area, you can also:
Change the cycle name by clicking the icon next to the original name, typing a new name in the Change display name dialog, and confirming with Apply.
Add rules to existing targets by clicking the icon on the right side of the row with the target name. The Add rule drawer will appear, where you can define your new rule in the way described above.
-
Manage an existing rule by clicking the three-dot icon on the right side of the rule row. The following options are available:
Edit opens the Edit rule drawer, where you can modify the rule name, target, trigger, and formula.
Duplicate opens the Add rule drawer pre-populated with the existing rule's configuration. You can use it as a starting point for a new rule.
Delete opens a confirmation dialog. Click Delete to remove the rule permanently.
Reorder rules within a target by dragging and dropping them using the icon on the left side of the rule row.
-
View the configuration of rules created automatically for compensation elements with Increase Amount and Increase Percentage by clicking the rule name directly. These rules cannot be edited or deleted. A View rule drawer with the rule details will slide from the right side of the screen, for example:

Review coverage using the Coverage map. This map lets you verify that your rules address all expected trigger scenarios for a given target field. To open it, click the Coverage map button next to the cycle name. A pop-up window will be displayed, as illustrated in the following figure:
Coverage map
The pop-up shows all possible trigger fields and marks which combinations are already covered by a rule. If gaps are identified, the Missing note indicates this clearly. You can create additional rules directly from the Coverage map to fill any gaps without leaving the view. To do so, click the icon next to the Missing note and complete necessary fields in the Add rule drawer that will appear.
Using the feature in the Planner
Once a compensation round is published, Planner calculations take effect immediately. When a user such as a manager or HRBP accesses the Comp review tab of a given compensation round in Planner > Compensation and edits a linked field there, the system automatically updates all dependent target fields in real time. No manual steps are required.
For example, a round configured with rules linking Monthly Increase %, Monthly Increase, New Annual Increase Amount, and New Annual Salary will recalculate the related fields whenever any one of them is edited. The recalculations work in all directions, which means that changing the percentage updates the amounts, and changing the amounts updates the percentage, together with the other linked figures.
Because the fields remain editable, managers and HRBPs can adjust any linked value; the system will propagate the change accordingly.
Columns with active Planner calculation rules are marked with a dedicated icon in the header, as presented in the illustration below:

Hovering over the icon displays a tooltip confirming that such rules apply to the column. Clicking the icon opens the Planner calculation rules drawer on the right, listing all rules configured for that column along with their trigger fields.
